Ortho Bionomy

Sheryl spent many years experimenting with different modalities, to help relieve the lower back and hip pain she had been experiencing since she was in her early 20’s. Finding a practitioner who used Ortho-Bionomy in 2009 brought about the relief she was looking for – and subsequently sparked her interest in the gentle approach to body correction. In 2019 she embarked on her training to become an Ortho-Bionomy practitioner.

Sheryl now offers Ortho-Bionomy sessions in her New Plymouth clinic – as a stand-alone modality – or alongside Hypnotherapy techniques - to offer support for pain or discomfort. An Ortho-Bionomy session may typically take one hour – with regular follow up sessions - as determined by the nature of the symptoms or injury.

Whilst Sheryl has personally experienced relief with Ortho-Bionomy from discomfort in her neck, shoulder, lower back, hips, and feet – other clients have also reported positive changes or relief from chronic fatigue, stress, injuries, aches & pains, or problems associated with postural and structural imbalances.

What is Ortho-Bionomy?

”Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-manipulative form of body therapy – stimulating the body to self-correct”

Ortho-Bionomy recognises that every person has an innate wisdom to bring healing from within, and relies on each individual’s self-corrective capacity to bring about healing in their body.

What does ‘Ortho-Bionomy’ mean?

Ortho - correct or aligned

Bio - life and nature

Onomy - principles or governing laws

Dr Arthur Lincoln Pauls (1929-1997), the founder of Ortho-Bionomy, was a judo instructor who trained as an osteopath in England in the 1970’s. During his training he read an article called Spontaneous Release Through Positioning (1964) by Lawrence Hugh Jones, an American Osteopath.

Jones described a system of structural correction work that did not require the use of force. Dr Pauls liked this approach, as it resonated with judo principles. He expanded on Jones’ work and incorporated his understanding of how to work with the body - not against it – from his martial arts training. This work was called Phased Reflex Techniques. Dr Pauls practiced and researched these techniques until a full system of corrective techniques was developed for the whole body – which he named Ortho-Bionomy.

I would like to sing from the rooftops my happiness over going to Sheryl for Ortho Bionomy treatment.

I had suffered with a bad upper back for weeks, and no amount of painkillers or physio could alleviate my 24/7 pain.

After just ONE session I felt 90% better. She recommended a second, and she was right. Within 2-3 days of the second appointment, the pain had gone - within the time frame she outlined to me.

Sheryl was calm, patient, professional and knowledgeable. She explained what she was doing at each stage, and why it was important to my body.

I HIGHLY recommend her therapy. You won’t regret the visit!
